Even within the hard-rock category, design and extraction methods vary, but almost all revolve around a few basic techniques:

The rooms can be mined out using conventional charge-and-blast techniques or with a machine called a continuous miner. The machine moves through the ore, creating rooms and pillars. A final pass drills through the pillars to recover the ore there, allowing the roofs to collapse behind the machine as it leaves each room.

Cut and Fill – For relatively narrow ore deposits, miners drill an access ramp adjacent to the ore deposit, from the surface down to the lowest point of the deposit. An operator then drives a drill through the ore from one side of the deposit to the other. Once the drift is complete, backfill, or waste material, is spread into the open drift, creating a platform for the next pass. The drill drives on top of this backfill to cut another drift through the ore. This continues until the drill cuts a drift across the top of the ore deposit.

Underground mining terminology and layout. Image: Hard rock mines include most metal and diamond mines. They tend to be deep, and the orebody is often steeply inclined (or dipping). Shafts can be as a deep as several kilometres. Access from the surface is via a shaft or a decline. There is a variety of mining methods used, often in the same mine, depending on the geometry of the orebody and the stability of the rock.

Ore is broken up by blasting and drilling. Ore is then removed or “mucked out” by  a LHD (load haul dump) machine, which resembles a low-profile articulated front-end loader. The ore may be dumped into a truck which then drives  out via a decline, or ore may be dumped down a chute or ore pass to an underground crusher and then moved to a shaft using conveyer-belts, underground trucks or train either to a shaft, a horizontal adit or via decline direct to the surface.

Short Interval Control (SIC)

Using mobile technology and real-time data, the app lets supervisors track work on their tablets or mobile phones while they are on site. It connects to the company’s existing scheduling software, Fewzion, so that the work of underground crews is regularly measured against plans and updated in real time.
